KAROLINA SZWED (born 1997 in Bielsko-Biała)
Studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice in 2016-2022. Lives and works in Warsaw. Szwed paints autobiographical situations with a fortuitous understatement, focusing more on impression than on coherence in the story. She is inspired by childishly true and naive things, dramatization of life resulting from the need for emotional regulation. She is interested in the compromise between morality and opportunities. For the artist, art is an attempt to understand the binary way of building reality in mainstream social thought and to critically work through its shortcomings.
Szwed believes that works describing individual experience resonate the most with the recipient, people connect thanks to specific similarities, and feeling a specific type of pain together helps to understand one another and find solidarity in experiencing. Apart from everyday observations, she is inspired by mysterious psychological horror computer games, Satoshi Kon’s anime and small objects that she finds or receives and have no function other than sentimental.
